Case study

“We want to reach out to all stakeholders in the wine community, from producers and processors, distributors, sommeliers, end-users and everyone in between. Together we can pave a sustainable future for wine and we are convinced that the project of the JRE and the Vaider Group is a step in the right direction.“

Peter Čas, CEO of Vaider Group AG

Background

  • A bottle accounts for 1/3 of the industry’s carbon footprint. Wine packaging contributes up to 40 % of the industry’s carbon footprint.
  • The average burgundy shape wine bottle weight is more than 620g. In the case of sparkling wines, the weight of bottles increases to 800g.
  • 1 BNI sold production of wine in the EU. The latest figures from Eurostat have revealed that the amount of sold wine production in 2022 across the European Union was 16.1 billion litres.
  • Sustainability doesn’t always look premium. Lighter, more sustainable wine bottles hold significant potential, particularly in the premium segment, by striking a balance where sustainability intensifies rather than compromises luxury.
  • Growing interest from end customers in sustainable products. Strategic partners and top brand owners recognise the trend, confirming that innovation and decarbonisation will be a key competitive advantage.
  • Glass production is an energy-intensive industry. The solution involves premium glass bottle production using hydrogen or electricity as the primary energy source, which can be combined with a lightweight design or a bottle redesign.

The manifesto for a sustainable wine culture

The Vaider Group and the JRE have launched a manifesto aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the wine industry.

»Sustainability and eco-awareness is important in all areas of our lives. The project we have set out with the Manifesto is designed to bring together important personalities from the gastronomy and business sectors and to change the wine industry in the long term. The bottle, which will be produced by our international partner Steklarna Hrastnik, part of the Vaider Group AG, will therefore be our second joint project to draw attention to the importance of sustainability in a way that will develop and offer a pragmatic and aesthetic solution.« (Gašper Puhan, JRE Vice-president)

The Vaider Group is already seeing increased interest from end customers in sustainable products, especially when they effectively complement the outstanding quality and aesthetic appearance of the bottles. This trend is also recognized by strategic partners and owners of the most prestigious brands, confirming that the ability to continuously innovate in the direction of decarbonizing production will become one of the key competitive advantages in the glass industry.

Among the distinguished signatories are: Peter Čas – CEO, Vaider Group AG, Hrastnik1860; Gašper Puhan –JRE Vice-president; Daniel Lehmann – Former President, JRE; Daniel Canzian – President, JRE; Hans van Manen – CEO, JRE; Renzo Cotarella – Winemaker and CEO, Marchesi Antinori; Ronnie Janssen – Commercial SVP, Domaines de Bournet-Lapostolle; Guillermo de Aranzabal Bittner – Deputy General Director, La Rioja Alta S.A.; Nerea Sanz – Marketing Manager, Decanter; Rod Smith – Master of Wine; Jancis Robinson – Master of Wine.

A toast to a sustainable tomorrow

To move forward, we need to return to our roots, nature & tradition.

The cultivation of the vine spread throughout the Mediterranean and into our region, dating back to ancient cultures, including the Romans. Even then, vines were highly valued, and wine was an essential part of daily life and rituals. Today, between 260 and 290 million hectoliters of wine are produced on 7.5 million hectares of land worldwide, with the final product strongly influenced by winemaking traditions.

In Slovenia, we take great pride in our winemaking traditions, which, alongside geographical location and climatic conditions, determine the final product.

One step further: 100% carbon-neutral Re.Vine

Our vision is to create a legacy of exceptional glassmaking that inspires sustainability, upholds quality, and protects the planet for future generations. Our mission is to reduce environmental impact while maintaining the highest glassmaking standards. Through innovation, partnerships, and community engagement, we aim to set new sustainability benchmarks that challenge the industry and exceed expectations.

We have transformed the tradition of winemaking and glassmaking know-how into a revolutionary bottle that is not only lightweight but also 100% carbon-neutral – sustainable yet premium – Re.Vine.

Reduction of the carbon footprint
in the production of Re•Vine

Scope 1 & 2 Bottles 92.432,00 bottles produced 1.000.000,00 235.000.000,00
Hybrid melting 21% 8,7 93,8 2204,1
Offsetting 58% 25,2 272,8 6411,7
Lightweighting 21% 13,1 141,2 3319,1
Total 100% 46,9 507,9 11935,0

Through lightweighting and hybrid melting, our production process has reduced our carbon footprint by 42 %. Specifically, we have achieved a 36,4 % reduction in melting emissions. Our hybrid regenerative furnace blends the efficiency of all-electric furnaces with the flexibility of traditional fossil-fuel furnaces. By increasing the share of electrical melting to over 40%, we have cut natural gas consumption and CO2 emissions by more than 50 %.

For 92.432 bottles produced, hybrid melting saved 8,7 tons of CO2 and lightweighting saved 13,1 tons of CO2, while for 235.000.000 bottles produced, hybrid melting saves 2204,1 tons of CO2 and lightweighting saves 3319,1 tons of CO2, all contributing to CO2 savings solely through production.

Our lightweighting initiative reduces the weight of bottles to 490 g, cutting energy consumption, water usage, and CO2 emissions. This innovative approach improves operational efficiency and product performance, all while maintaining brand style. By using less raw material, lighter bottles also lower transportation costs and reduce resource strain, providing direct benefits to our clients.

Potential impact

  • Paving the way for a greener, eco-friendly wine culture.
  • Worldwide production: 294,8 MHL (1% reduction = 29,4 million liters).
  • Annual reduction in CO₂ emissions: 14,663 tons.
